Jeff DurbinFinally a real "Choice" - ELECT A VETERAN!

Jeff Durbin, MSgt, USAF, Ret.

Clark County Commissioner District F

2010 - Back to Basics - Make it Happen

Independent American Candidate

Welcome!

Jeff is running for the office of Clark County Commissioner of District F in Nevada to help bring our county back to basics. Get to know more about him by reading about his experience growing up in a tough neighborhood; his military life; his life as a loving husband and father; his contributions as a civil servant; his plight as a small business owner; and his objectives as a politician.

A Neighborhood Kid

Jeff DurbinJeff grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. His family was poor and he was the second eldest of nine kids. Although poor, his parents stressed the importance of hard, honest work habits. His father, now 76, continues to work to supplement his retirement funds.

Jeff's family lived in the inner-city projects (federal housing). Ghetto life was all he knew at the time. Life was hard and the majority of the kids in the neighborhood were dropouts and users of alcohol and drugs. However, it was in this neighborhood that he had an epiphany that changed the whole course of his life.

While walking home one night about one o'clock in the morning, he ran across some of his friends that were hanging out by the city pool. He saw they were holding cans and bottles of liquor, beer, and wine. They tried to convince Jeff to join them in what they thought was "fun". He saw a couple of them injecting themselves with needles. It was at that very moment that Jeff had his epiphany. He realized they were injecting themselves with heavy drugs and he didn't want any part of it. This was a real wake up call for him. He knew he wanted out of that environment and he decided he was going to do whatever it took to get out as quickly as he could. This determination motivated Jeff to graduate from high school, go on to college, obtain a degree from the University of Maryland, and serve 23-years of active duty in the military.

A Military Man

Jeff Durbin, MSgt, USAF, Ret., gave his country 23 years of active duty in the Air Force as a Master Sergeant. Part of that time was served in the Vietnam War and Gulf War era. He was consistently asked by his Command to take different assignments every couple of years because of his unique ability to build teams and analyze programs that needed improvement. They knew he was a born "leader". He was appointed to the position of Inspector General several times. This position is only offered to the most decorated and highly-qualified military personnel. Prospects for the position of Inspector Generals are selected from the top military personnel who have the most comprehensive training, skills, and leadership ability.

A Family Man

Jeff and his Las Vegas-born wife Salli have lived off and on in the valley for over nine years. Jeff and Salli met and married in Las Vegas when Jeff was assigned to Nellis AFB. They have been married for 35 years. Salli's family have been residents of Las Vegas for more than 40 years. Jeff & Salli have two adult children.  Their daughter, Christina Orsini lives in Dana Point, California and is a state board certified radiology technician and is married to Dr. Thomas Orsini, a reknowned Radiologist.  They have one child, Thomas.  Jeff and Salli's son, Jeffrey II, lives in Gilbert, Arizona with his wife Candi and their four children, Sage, Emma, Saylor and Stellar.  Jeffrey II is currently a pastor in Arizona.

Jeff is a faithful Roman Catholic. He believes God is in control of his life and that everything happens for a reason. His integrity, honesty, and high level of ethics are the byproducts of his religious beliefs, along with his work ethics instilled by his family.  Not to mention, a military career that demanded excellence in personal integrity and committment to this nation!

Civil Servant

Jeff DurbinAfter his retirement from 23 years in the military, Jeff worked for the Veterans Administration. He was the purchasing agent responsible for buying every product and service for the veterans hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. In just a few years, he became the primary point of contact for every function of the medical facility.  He prided himself in providing the doctors and staff with the life-saving essentials when they had only seconds to act. He was the "go-to" person because of his leadership-skills and background in logistics management.

He later became a shop union steward & the Federal Legislative Chair for the AFGE union in the State of Arizona, and as such, met frequently with congressmen, delegates, and senators throughout the United States. When the government cut veteran funding, Jeff decided it was time to stand up and rally against the cuts. He coordinated efforts and established a coalition of protests that resulted in more funds being allocated. Jeff was not afraid to stand up against the existing powers to do what he thought was right.  He did this on his own time and at his own expense.

When Jeff learned that veteran nurses were not given cost-of-living raises like other federal employees, he took on their cause and demanded fair treatment. He sent letters detailing the nurses' situation to every political forum that had any military affiliation and every local newspaper. A flood of response letters hit the offices of politicians and the Veterans Administration. He won the fight and approval was granted to give the nurses cost-of-living raises like the other federal employees.

A Small Business Owner

Jeff has been a small business owner for many years. For five years, he and his son operated a Martial Arts school in Arizona that taught karate to children as young as four years old. He loved working with the kids and especially seeing how disciplined they became over time. He did all of this while still working a "full-time" job.

Jeff has been the owner of a personal, home-based business since 2002. His company bids on government contracts for various services and supplies. To avoid any conflict of interest, if elected, he will give-up his business in order to devote all of his time and efforts to his duties as Clark County Commissioner-District F.

As a business owner, Jeff has firsthand knowledge of the impact of government on the daily operations and overall health of small businesses. He has felt the impact of high taxes on business, especially from the federal government.

A Politician

Jeff served in the Presidential Unit of the White House for six years. He was responsible for communications and protocols related to Air Force One, and he interacted with White House dignitaries, VIPs, and Kings and Queens. He managed Presidential travel requirements under Presidents George H.W. Bush and Willaim Jefferson Clinton.

Jeff has been interested in politics for as long as he can remember. He is an "ideas" man. He put his thoughts on paper and sent them to Presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan, as well as both Presidents Bush. They always responded; and subsequently, he continues to be on the Christmas card mailing list. This is quite an honor because the White House Christmas Card list is very limited.

When Jeff was interviewed about running for office, he said: "When I took my oath of office for the military, I didn't include an expiration date."

Jeff's objectives as an elected public official for Nevada are:

  • Adhere to the constitution
  • Bring more manpower and funds to the Clark County judicial system
